Rising Tensions and Human Rights Concerns in Ethiopia's Abee-Dongoroo and Wollo zones of Oromia

The escalating conflict in Abee-Dongoroo, West Oromia and Harxummaa Fursee district, Wallo, North Oromia has raised concerns over human rights abuses and political instability. According to local sources, the Oromo people, indigenous to the Oromia region, are increasingly subjected to acts of violence and property destruction perpetrated by the governing Prosperity Party (PP) forces. These reports, received on February 28, 2026, have stirred widespread apprehension. The Oromo people have been at the heart of a political struggle for decades. The Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), a political organization advocating for the rights and autonomy of the Oromo people, has been actively resisting the PP forces. Despite the escalating violence, the Oromo people continue to display resilience, resisting the PP forces' attempts to suppress their rights and encroach on their land. The fight for autonomy and respect for their human rights persists amidst an increasingly complex political landscape. As the situation in Abee-Dongoroo in West Oromia and Harxummaa Fursee districts of Wallo zone of Oromia remains volatile, the international community closely monitors the potential for escalating violence and the human rights implications.

Continuing the pattern,  in the Qellam Wallaggaa zone, specifically in the Gaawoo Qeebbe district located in the western part of the Oromia region, a tragic incident occurred on February 28, 2026. Forces affiliated with the Prosperity Party (PP) targeted and killed an innocent civilian farmer, Mr. Tamasgeen Gurmeessaa, in the Gaawoo Icoo area. Local sources reveal that the victim was killed under the pretext of being a supporter of the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), a claim used as a justification to invade his home and execute him. The Gaawoo Qeebbe incident is the latest in a series of alleged human rights abuses committed by PP forces. The killing of Mr. Gurmeessaa is seen as part of a broader pattern of violence aimed at the Oromo people, particularly those suspected of having ties to the OLA. Local communities in Gaawoo Qeebbe have expressed deep concern over the escalating violence and widespread human rights abuses. They report a range of atrocities, including arbitrary arrests, torture, extrajudicial killings, and property destruction, causing immense suffering and displacement among the local population. The human rights situation in the Oromia region continues to worsen, with the civilian population bearing the brunt of the violence. The killing of Mr. Gurmeessaa is a stark reminder of the volatile situation in the area, and the urgent need for international attention. The escalation of violence in the Oromia region, specifically in areas such as Gaawoo Qeebbe, presents a pressing concern for human rights. The international community and human rights organizations are urged to focus their attention on these incidents, ensuring that the rights of the Oromo people are protected, and those responsible for these atrocities are held accountable. The situation in Gaawoo Qeebbe underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive and impartial investigation into these incidents. Without accountability and justice, the cycle of violence is likely to continue, further undermining the stability of the region and the safety of its people.
