Abiy Ahmed came to power riding on the Oromo youth struggle that shook the EPRDF to its core four years ago. Early on, Abiy Ahmed promised the Oromo youth that he was one of their own and that he would make sure to deliver their demands for justice, democracy, and self-rule.

We the undersigned Oromo and Yemeni Human Rights Organizations and Civic institutions have held a joint press conference, on March 16, 2021. The purpose of the conference is to exchange information and raise awareness about the atrocities committed against Oromo and other refugees in Yemen, Sanaa.

The Oromo Studies Association (OSA) offers this urgent message to Oromo political prisoners detained unjustly in Ethiopia. You have resorted to put your lives on the line through a hunger strike to make your voices (and all Oromo voices including ours) heard inside the country and in the public arena. Your voices were now silenced at a critical time. Yet today you are heard.
You are our fellow OSA members, our former President, 2015 Keynote Speaker and 2016 and 2018 conference presenters together with 22 fellow prisoners who are also victims of erasure. We hear you loud and clear. We …

The BBC reported on 12 February that political prisoners in Ethiopia had collapsed after sixteen days
of hunger strike (uploaded 08.26 Opposition leaders in Ethiopia on hunger strike). Further
deterioration in the health of leaders of the Oromo Liberation Front and Oromo Federalist Congress,
said by their lawyers to be already weak, could precipitate further widespread unrest according to the
report.
Civil war, which has killed scores of thousands of civilians in Tigray is likely to escalate in other
areas, especially Oromia - now under martial law for two years. Killings, including executions in

The political condition in Ethiopia has been deteriorating in the last few months. Since the ruling party ignored the advice of the Oromo Liberation Front and Oromo Federalist Congress for national dialogue and reconciliation and unilaterally postponed the election that was slated to be held at the end of August 2020, it has been frantically running around attacking legally registered opposition parties, particularly the most popular and dominant Oromo Liberation Front. Most of the leaders of the Oromo Liberation Front, such as Colonel Gamachu Ayana, Abdi Ragassa, Lami Benya, Dr. Gada Oljira, Prof. Bayana Ruda, Dawit Abdata, Michael Boran, Aman …
