In recent developments from East Arsi Zone of Oromia, specifically in the districts of Limmu and Bulbulo, it has been reported that elements of the Prosperity Party (PP) are forcibly collecting money and grain from local communities. This incident, reported by our local sources on March 23, 2026, is being justified under the claim of "supporting the families of the militias".

Exerting Pressure on Local Communities

According to local residents, the PP forces in the aforementioned districts, particularly in the villages of Metu Sedi and Limmu Merti, have been pressuring the community. These forces insist that the families of the militias engaged in the war require financial aid, food support, and various materials. In Metu Sedi, it has been reported that a sum of 50,000 Birr or more is being collected from the affluent individuals, whereas amounts ranging from 7,000 to 10,000 Birr are being extracted from those who have little to spare. Residents revealed that those unable to meet these demands are often forced to either abandon their homes or sell their possessions to generate the required funds. Similarly, in Limmu Merti, a bushel of wheat is being collected from each individual under the guise of feeding the families of the militias. Reports from residents indicate that those unable to meet these demands are subjected to physical abuse, home invasions, and looting of their property.

Threats and Intimidation

These forces have been reported to threaten residents unable to pay, stating, "You can't feed your own homes, while they are sacrificing their lives". They resort to beating these individuals, looting their properties, and even threatening to send them to the battlefields to serve as militias. Moreover, travelers entering the city from other areas, or those working in the city and attempting to travel to other cities, are being intercepted and sent to police stations. At these locations, they are coerced into paying money, and some are even transferred to military camps to undergo military training.

Human Rights Concerns

This recent development has sparked significant concerns over the human rights situation in the area. The actions of the PP forces infringe on the economic rights of the residents and pose a threat to their personal security and freedom of movement. The use of force and intimidation to extract resources and services from the local community starkly violates the principles of human dignity and autonomy.

A Snapshot of the Broader Political Struggle

The situation in East Arsi Zone serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing political developments in Oromia and the challenges faced by its citizens. The ongoing conflict has not only precipitated a severe humanitarian crisis but has also exposed the power dynamics and struggles for control and resources. The residents of East Arsi Zone, like many others across the country, continue to bear the brunt of this conflict. Their stories illuminate the realities on the ground, the human rights issues at stake, and the urgent need for a resolution to the conflict. As the situation continues to unfold, we will closely monitor the developments and provide updates as more information becomes available.
